Long-term Disability Self Management Course

The self management course is a course which is for those who are of working age who are living with a long term disability. It is made up of four sessions with each session lasting approximately four hours. Each session focuses on one of the following topics:

Working with your healthcare professional

In this session you will learn about what kind of information you want to be sharing with your doctor, how to present this information, how to prepare and use patient diaries, how to prepare for an outpatient appointment and your patient rights

Education

In this session you will learn about what educational establishments are obliged to do for those with disability, what facilities exist to allow those with disability to overcome any disability related difficulties encountered in education, an Introduction to the Disability Discrimination Act and what to do and where to go if you were to experience discrimination

Employment

In this session you will learn about what employers are obliged to do for those with disability in the work place, what facilities exist to help those with disability encountering difficulties in the workplace, the Disability Discrimination Act, what to do and where to go if you were to experience discrimination and employment opportunities for those with disability

Dealing with negative emotions

In this session you will learn about different ways in overcoming negative emotions such as anger, fear, depression, frustration etc that are too commonly associated with living with a long term disability and social opportunities for those with disability
